Gestational diabetes, like any other health condition, does not discriminate and can be experienced by pregnant women- even if they’re a multi-awarded singer like Mariah Carey. In this week’s post, we recount Mariah Carey’s battle with gestational diabetes and the steps she took to manage this type of diabetes that presents itself only on pregnant women.
Mariah Carey, in subsequent interviews, shared how difficult her pregnancy was with her twins – Monroe, and Moroccan. In an interview with Access Hollywood, she admitted that she was diagnosed with gestational diabetes which is a type of diabetes that only develops on women during pregnancy. She claims that she have managed this condition by carefully planning out what she eats.
In addition to being diagnosed with gestational diabetes, Mariah also experienced complications because she was then carrying twins. During her second and third trimester, she developed oedema and was recommended for bed rest until she gave birth. Oedema, manifested with swollen ankles and feet, happens when a pregnant woman’s body is holding more fluid than usual. This is because as the baby grows, the uterus puts blood pressure on your pelvis which blocks the circulation of blood on the lower limbs. Oedema is a fairly common condition during pregnancy but it can also be a sign of pre-eclampsia which on the other hand, is a serious condition for a pregnant woman and her baby. Mariah’s oedema was said to be quite different from normal conditions as it escalated to her legs and upper limbs.
According to Mariah, she really had a tough pregnancy that even bed rest hurts. She added that she learned a lot during her pregnancy and wants women all over the world to be prepared in case something like that happens to them. She clarified though that it was worth it since she have two adorable kids now but she don’t if she’d like to go through the experience again.
“If God plans me to experience that again, then I’ll be happy to be blessed with more children. Other than that, I don’t think me and Nick would love to went through that again soon. It was really tough”, Mariah revealed to sources. Prior to this pregnancy, Mariah had experienced a miscarriage.
Monroe and Moroccan are now two years old and Mariah has since then lost 70 lbs. of her pregnancy weight. She credits Jenny Craig for this outstanding post pregnancy weight loss. She also stresses that what’s important is not how you look but how you take care of yourself by regulating what you eat and what you take in your body.
